Routine dental cleanings are essential for the removal of the plaque and calculus that cause cavities and gum disease. Professional cleanings and exams provide an opportunity to evaluate the health of your mouth, which is linked to the overall health of your body. These visits are made as painless and efficient as possible by using a variety of instruments and medicaments. Most patients follow a recommended schedule of having a professional cleaning every 6 months although some people require more frequent intervention. Your dentist and hygienist will devise a customized treatment plan that will allow you to maintain optimal dental health.

To make your cleaning appointments as comfortable as possible, it is important to maintain excellent habits at home. Keep dietary sugars to a minimum and brush with a fluoridated toothpaste for two minutes, twice daily. Despite the Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services’ omission of the recommendation to floss in its 2016 guidelines, we strongly encourage the use of floss and/or interdental cleaners.
