Oral Cancer Screenings

As part of every dental exam, our patients receive a thorough oral cancer screening. Many lifestyle and environmental factors have been identified as risk factors for oral cancer, but tobacco use remains the single most important and preventable cause of this disease. Infection with the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (specifically the HPV 16 type) has been linked to a subset of oral cancers at any age. Any white or red patch that persists for more than 7 days should be evaluated; otherwise, a screening will be performed routinely to look for cancerous or precancerous lesions.
